The OIT and TMI have secured partial funding to offer this matching grant opportunity to all our iTeach/iLearn schools. Schools that take part in this three-way match will be responsible for a payment of $6,676 to Teaching Matters which represents a savings of more than $10,500!

1. What literacy curriculum does your school currently implement? (If “Balanced Literacy”, please explain how your program works.)
P.17X supports the implementation of the New York State Performance Standards in English Language Arts, the Department of Education's Scope and Sequence K-8 as well as the Balanced Literacy Initiative. The teachers use the Workshop Model to deliver instruction. This methodology allows for teacher "modeling" of the lesson, shared and guided reading and writing practices, independent reading and reflective sharing by the students.
We use Ramp-Up and Read 180 for intervention services.
2. What are the most common challenges in teaching writing/social studies in your school?
The students at P.17X exhibit severe emotional challenges which ultimately might have hindered their academic progress. They display weaknesses in the following areas:decoding, sequencing and comprehension. They are reading at least 2-4 years below grade level and are often apprehensive to participate in the writing process, sometimes, due to a deminished sense of self. The staff at P.17X are relatively new to the teaching profession (75% are teaching fellows) and inexperienced in how to teach the writing process.
3. Briefly explain at least one way your school currently integrates technology with core instruction.
P.17X is an ITeach/ILearn school and all the classrooms at the middle school level are equipped with laptops and Smartboards. Teachers support instruction by exposing their students to powerpoint, keynote, imovie and iphoto. When students participate in project-based learning they have access to a plethora of information delivered through interactive software.
4. Please indicate school progress in achieving the professional development goals of the iTeach/iLearn initiative.
Out of the Box training - as of Fall '07 - 52% of teachers were trained.

In total, as of Fall '07, teachers have received 450 hours of professional development including
Interactive White Board, Literacy, Math, Social Studies and Science taining.

I would like to send additional teachers but I cannot release too many teachers on the same day because of safety issues.

Response to Literature, Editorials and Poetry
NB: The full-day teacher institute is an essential feature of the program and your participation requires that teachers be available to attend. The Institute for Response to Literature will be held on November 29th at Teaching Matters. The Institute for Voices and Choices will be held on either January 9th or 10th.
Costs associated with hiring substitute teachers will be absorbed by the school.
